More Shopify store owners have been asking us about AI shopping lately. The idea is simple. Someone types “a carry-on bag under $200” into ChatGPT, and it shows products from real stores. Shopify has a channel for this called Shopify Agentic Storefronts, and for most eligible stores it is already switched on.
Being switched on doesn’t mean your products will show up, though. In this post, we go through how to check your setup, what you need to sell on ChatGPT Shopify allows today, and which product details to fix first. We also share our view on whether it’s worth your time. Agentic commerce Shopify supports is still new, so some details may change. Check your own admin as you read.
What Shopify Agentic Storefronts does?
Shopify Agentic Storefronts sends your product details to AI shopping tools through Shopify Catalogue. Current examples of such tools are ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and the Shop app. The price and stock information are updated, so the AI operates using the latest data.
Checkout is different on each channel. On ChatGPT, the buyer goes to your normal store checkout. This occurs within ChatGPT’s in-app browser or in a separate tab online. Your brand identity, discount codes, and payment options function similarly to how they do on your website.
Google, Copilot and Meta can offer direct checkout inside the chat where it’s available.
On fees, Shopify’s help page says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT apart from your normal payment processing fees. Some older articles mention a 4% fee. We’d go with what Shopify’s help page and your own admin say.
Requirements to sell on ChatGPT Shopify stores need to be met.
Shopify lists four things for ChatGPT:
- Your store sells to customers in the United States. The store itself can be based in another country, like India.
- Your products are eligible for the Shopify Catalogue.
- You have agreed to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- Your Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Return and Refund Policy are filled in under Settings > Policies.
The Shopify catalogue has its own rules. You need a Starter plan or higher, and your store can’t be behind a password page. Every product needs a title, at least one image and a price above zero. Products set to Unlisted, or hidden from search engines, are left out.
A few categories are not allowed at all. These include alcohol, tobacco and vaping, CBD, weapons, event tickets, live animals, and services or add-ons like extended warranties. B2B-only products aren’t supported either.
Your account matters too. Verify your email, turn on two-step login, ship orders on time and keep chargebacks low. Shopify says it reviews this over time.
How to sell products in ChatGPT with Shopify, step by step:
To sell on ChatGPT, Shopify mostly asks you to check settings, not build anything. Here is what we’d do.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
- Look at “Allow Shopify to manage for me.” When it’s on, all channels stay active, and you’re added to new ones automatically.
- Find the Shopify catalogue under Sources. If you’re eligible, you’ll see a product count. If not, you’ll see an ‘ineligible’ tag, and you can click it to see the reason.
- Go to Settings > Policies and make sure all three policies are filled in and read properly.
- If you keep titles or descriptions in metafields, click “Review product data mapping” so the catalogue reads the right fields.
- Use the search preview on the same page. Enter what your customers would type, and see what products the AI suggests.
Don’t treat the preview as the final result, since every AI tool has its own ranking mechanism.
It’s still a decent way to spot weak listings.
If you ever want to stop sharing with ChatGPT, you can turn off Shopify Catalogue access for it. Shopify says it can take up to 7 days to stop, and your products may still appear through normal web crawling. To fully hide a product, set it to Unlisted. Just know this also hides it from Google and your store search.
The Shopify Catalog product data checklist we’d start with:
This is where most of the work is. Shopify says AI platforms look at your title, description, images, type, vendor, collections, tags, barcode and variants. Below is the Shopify Catalog product data checklist we’d go through first.
| Field: | What to fix? |
| Title | Adding such text as “Women’s merino wool crew socks” gives more context to the AI than the brand name only. |
| Description | Include real information such as material, size, product usage, and target audience. Place any disclaimers in the first 6,000 characters. |
| Images | Use more than one. Show different angles and the product in use. |
| Variants | Use plain option names like “Navy” and “Large”. Shopify will check for difficult-to-understand acronyms and numbers. |
| Barcode | Add the UPC, GTIN or ISBN if applicable. |
| Type, vendor, collections, tags | Fill these in the same way across the store. |
| Policies | Keep your pages for shipping, returns and refund sections completed. They are considered a part of the store’s validity by Shopify. |
| Reviews | The listing quality score uses reviews that come from trusted sources. |
| Compare at price. | Choose whether the catalogue shows it to AI tools. The setting is in the catalogue mapping. |
Don’t try to fix the whole store in one go. Begin with your top twenty products. You will be able to see the product listing quality in the preview search, and this will help you to identify the weakest aspects, whether they are descriptions, images, reviews, variants or policies. Start by addressing the weakest aspect and continue further.
All the stores created on Shopify automatically provide /agents.md and /llms.txt files.
You don’t need an app to create them.
Where can we help?
At 360 Digital Idea, we’re a digital marketing agency based in New Delhi. Product data touches a few areas we already work in, which are Shopify Development, Ecommerce SEO and Content Writing Services. A store that has the same product page issues across hundreds of items usually needs someone to look at the theme, the product pages and the text together. If you’d like another opinion before you start, you can talk to us. You can also do this yourself with the checklist above.
Is Shopify agentic commerce worth it?
For most stores, we’d say yes. It’s on by default, there’s no extra app, and Shopify lists no fees for ChatGPT. The cost will be the time you need to devote to enhancing your product pages, which will also positively impact the regular traffic from Google.
Keep your expectations realistic. Shopify suggests that ranking also depends on some other aspects, including popularity, user engagement and brand recognition.
A new store with ten products won’t show up in every ChatGPT answer.
It may not fit well if you mostly sell in the blocked categories, only sell to businesses, or don’t ship to the US.
You can measure it from Sales channels > Agentic. It shows sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion for each AI channel. Wait about a month, and then compare. When people ask us if Shopify agentic commerce is worth it, we point them to those numbers first, since they’re from your own store.
Where SEO fits in?
Clear product pages help in Google and in AI answers, so we don’t treat them as two separate jobs. A good title and a proper description help both. Shopify also says to follow normal SEO practices for AI visibility. This is the reason our AI SEO Services and AEO Services sit close to our e-commerce SEO work. If you’re already working on product pages for search, you’ve done a good part of the checklist.
Mistakes we’d avoid:
- Thinking “on by default” means the job is done.
- Copying the manufacturer’s description onto every product page.
- Blocking AI crawlers and assuming the catalogue stops too. Shopify says robots.txt and network blocking only affect open-web discovery and don’t stop the catalogue from sending your products to channels you’ve turned on.
- Setting products to ‘Unlisted’ and forgetting that it hides them from Google as well.
- Leaving a store policy empty.
Where to start?
Shopify Agentic Storefronts takes very little to switch on and quite a bit more to do well. This week, open Sales Channels > Agentic, check your Catalogue status, and confirm your three policies. Then go through the Shopify Catalog product data checklist for your best sellers. Come back after 30 days and look at the numbers.
That’s how to sell products in ChatGPT with Shopify without making it complicated. Agentic commerce Shopify offers right now is mostly a product data job, and stores that fix it early will have less to catch up on later.
FAQs
Q1. Are Shopify Agentic Storefronts on by default?
For eligible stores, yes. Shopify says all available channels can access your products through the Shopify Catalogue unless you change the setting. Check Sales Channels > Agentic to see where your store stands.
Q2. How to sell products in ChatGPT with Shopify?
You don’t set up much. Make sure your store and products are eligible for the catalogue, your three policies are complete, and you’ve agreed to the supplemental terms. After that, work on your product data. Buyers from ChatGPT go to your normal checkout.
Q3. Can I sell on ChatGPT Shopify from outside the US?
Yes, if your store sells to customers in the United States. The store itself can be based in another country, such as India.
Q4. Does Shopify charge extra to sell in ChatGPT?
Shopify’s help page says there are no fees beyond standard payment processing fees. Terms can change, so look at your admin.
Q5. Why aren’t my products showing in ChatGPT?
Start with the Ineligible message in Sales channels > Agentic if you see one. Common reasons are a password page, unlisted products, missing policies, a blocked category or thin product data. Even eligible products may not rank high.
Q6. Can I hide products from AI tools?
You can turn off Catalogue access for ChatGPT or Copilot, and it can take up to 7 days. Web crawling may still show your products. Setting a product to ‘Unlisted’ hides it fully, but it also hides it from Google and your store search.
Q7. Do I need an app or an llms.txt file?
No. Shopify serves agents.md, llms.txt and llms-full.txt for every store by default. You can change them with theme templates if you want to.
Q8. Is Shopify agentic commerce worth it for a small store?
Usually yes, since there’s no extra fee and the work improves your product pages anyway. Track sales, sessions and conversion by channel for a month before you decide how much more time to put in.
